Hawaii

I found out from my sister that my parents are in Hawaii. Great for them. I am a bit surprised that they did not tell me they were going. I guess its just another example of our growing communication problem.

True I did not want to go home for Christmas because it was so awful last year. But I did not feel there was any sorrow on their side too. I need to be able to visit without having to stay at their house. They have turned into tyrants within their house. They set rules on me they would never enforce on other relatives staying over. I cannot believe they gave me a guilt trip because I slept until 11:00. Such that I did not feel I was able to visit any of my friends for fear of further insulting my parents. I was so angry Christmas (2002) day that I went down to my room and packed and was going to take a cab to the airport and wait it out. That is until my nephew Jack came in to see what I was doing. Once the kids got there, everything was ok, but nothing was resolved. I think it was the lingering irritation from the fight, that continues to this day. I cannot remember what it was about, but I know it was pretty bad. I am not mad at them, I just think they have no respect for me nor treat me like an adult.

Of course I was dethroned as #1 son once Jack was born. That was fine. A man in his 30s (at the time) does not really need to be treated like a child. Trouble seems to be, though, a man in his 40s does not either.

Asthma

My asthma is pretty bad. My lingering cough is almost exactly correlated with my asthma. When I take my Bronkaid the coughs go away, and return 4 hours later, exactly when the pills wear off. The pills have ephedra in them. I winder if there could be some kind of interaction with my adderall. I know it cuts my appetite. I wonder if my Asthma is here to stay, or it will get better like it did when first diagnosed?

Monday. When asked "whats going on now?" by Nick, I should have said could be anything. I said "Nothing". But I was feeling like crap and would not have had much fun. I had him listed as a P/u style trick only.

Oh well. I have missed chances before, I will again. But honestly the sick feeling was pretty bad.

Snow facts

  • Duluth has recorded more than 39 inches of snow in January, the third-snowiest January on record and one of the top-10 snowiest months on record.

  • Duluth has more than 27 inches of snow on the ground for the first time since March 2001.

  • The 70 inches of snow that has fallen so far this season is more than the 56.3 inches that fell all of last winter.

Snowfall nears record
WINTER STORM:Waves of wind joined with Lake Superior moisture to dump 2 feet of snow on North Shore hilltops.
BY MELANIE EVANS AND JOHN MYERS
NEWS TRIBUNE STAFF WRITERS

If you live on top of the hill and are sick of shoveling or snowblowing, just call a friend who lives down near the lake.

It's possible they didn't even work up a sweat.

A major winter storm combined with wind off Lake Superior to give Duluth more than 2 feet of snow from Sunday into Monday.

The National Weather Service at Duluth International Airport reported 24.8 inches of snow as of 8 p.m. Monday. And the 23.2 inches that fell before 4 p.m. was the third-highest 24-hour snow total on record in Duluth.

Lower-elevation areas -- such as downtown Duluth, Morgan Park and Lakeside -- received only 6 to 8 inches of snow, less than half the hilltop totals.

Areas of Northwestern Wisconsin and north of the Iron Range received even less.

Patti Olson, a Daugherty Hardware & Appliance employee, awoke Monday to 20 inches of snow outside her Rice Lake Township home. The impressive blanket was a pleasant surprise.

"It's just about time we had a normal winter," she said.

Daugherty's owner, Scott Lundberg, barely noticed the dusting at his Poplar home. "I got two inches," he said.

It's not uncommon for the Twin Ports to see significant snow discrepancies because of topography and Lake Superior's unique effect. But it's been so long since we've had a normal winter that many people forget.

All of the Northland received at least some snow as a giant low pressure system moved east across the nation's heartland. But higher elevations from Duluth to Two Harbors and on to Isabella received an extra boost from the lake and elevation effect, ending up with more than 20 inches.

Craig Sanders, a senior meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Duluth, said the counterclockwise rotation around the low pressure system sent waves of already moist air over Lake Superior and right at Duluth. The lake added additional moisture.

When east winds pushed the air into the hillside, it rose rapidly, and the moisture was squeezed out at the top of the hills as snow. Lots of snow.

"In this case, it's the elevation effect as much as it is the lake effect," Sanders said.

Strong winds piled drifts more than three feet high in upper Woodland, Kenwood and Hermantown. Plows battled all day to keep up.

"I've been dealing with snow since 5 a.m. Lots of shoveling and snowblowing and plowing," said Roger Truscott, who manages the Woodland Avenue Spur adjacent to his home.

"It's a lot of work, and I'm really happy," said Truscott, an outdoor enthusiast who spent Sunday snowmobiling near Finland. "It needs to be like this every year," he said. "If you don't like the snow, there's a place called Florida."

Kathryn Fuller found a dry place to perch while waiting for a Duluth Transit Authority bus at the corner of Woodland and Minneapolis avenues.

The University of Minnesota Duluth reference librarian stood on top of a bus bench to escape a snowbank.

"It isn't much of a bench," she said, after climbing down for fear she would miss her bus. "It's kind of narrow."

The university, Lake Superior College and the College of St. Scholastica closed Monday because of the storm. Fuller ventured out to "get out of the house," she said. "It's beautiful."

The Sunday-Monday storm deposited significantly less than the all-time Duluth snowfalls of 36.9 inches, set Oct. 31-Nov. 3, 1991, and 33.1 inches, set from Dec. 5-7, 1950.

And Monday's heaviest snow was focused in such a small area that the storm didn't pack nearly the broad impact of the 1991 Halloween storm, which dumped more than two feet across all of Minnesota and much of northern Wisconsin.

Monday's snow was lighter than many large dumpings we receive.

But the accumulation caused more than 100 schools and school districts in Minnesota to either cancel or delay classes for Monday, including in Duluth and most of the surrounding towns.

Lake Superior College junior Tom Coles slept instead of studied Monday morning after the snow day postponed a human anatomy quiz.

Coles and Joseph Best, also a Lake Superior College junior, ventured out to buy sleds, and planned to spend the evening watching basketball.

Brothers Garrett and Tim Clemenson built forts in the side yard of their Central Hillside home.

Across Minnesota, snowfall amounts ranged from four inches on the Iron Range and more than six inches in the Twin Cities to more than 16 inches in New York Mills, Ada and Pequot Lakes.

Snow was expected to end overnight in most areas as bitter cold air retakes the region. Highs today will struggle into the single digits above zero and wind chills Tuesday night will hit -30 degrees or lower in some areas.

There's a chance of light snow on Tuesday night, especially along the Ontario border.

Latin Lessons

Having hunted for my copy of the book off and on for over a year, I went ahead and ordered another copy of Learn Latin by Peter Jones
It is worth a paltry $7.95 not to have to brave my freezing garage full of boxes.
Ironic considering it was a "bargain book" at Barnes and Noble 4 years ago. But what if this poem is true?

Latin is a dead language
As dead as it can be
First it killed the Romans
And now it's killing me
All are dead who wrote it
All are dead who spoke it
All die who learn it
Blessed death - they earn it --Unknown

Naaa.

Ps there is a follow up by the same author called "Learn Ancient Greek"
both these editions are currently available ata good price from Barnes and Noble (dot com) not Amazon (they have used editions selling at triple the BN price).

Fire Island

As I re-watch Longtime Companion, I reminisce of my trip to Fire Island.

First I remember that I was at a court show and drank too much the night before, which caused me to oversleep and miss my plane. I got out of Lexington, but stuck in Atlanta for a day. A rainstorm had caused many flights to be canceled, and I as a missy-miss (my flight that is) was a low priority. At one point I was announced a standby site, only to be pushed aside by some other person running late. I talked to Jeffrey and told him I'd be late, and persuaded him to leave and go to the Island as scheduled, and I would find my way there.

I made arrangements to stay on Long Island with Mary Susan. We caught up a bit, but she was very tired. The next morning we had press pot coffee, went out for bagels, and she dropped me off at the ferry in Sayville. Not before she taught me how to make butter. A procedure I'd use later. As I was on the ferry I realized I had not called Jeffrey that I was on my way. But - he was there waiting for me. As I left the boat, someone noticed my carry-on, a bowling ball bag, and remarked "Bowling Ball?" and I just joked back, "what! There are no lanes out here?"

The cabin, known as the YMCA was sparse. It reminded me a lot of my grandparent's Hide-Away Resort cabins. It was actually half a house, the other half occupied by the owner. A gay senior that bought it with his lover in the 1950s. The lover has since died, but (Stanley?) continues to come every summer, and is joined daily by other seniors for cards and stuff.

Jeffrey's roommate was Craig. I had met Craig briefly when I was at Night of 1000 gowns in 2001. He was originally from Portland and was friends with The Lovely Suzanne. The guys had an inflatable mattress for me to sleep on. Shortly after arriving, I think we made the rounds, and visited Panzi and Billy Anne Miller around the corner. Jose, Mama, would be staying with Billy Anne that weekend too. I'd get a chance to visit with her later.

That night we walked to the bay-side to see the sunset. We were joined by two of Jeffrey's friends, Coffee drinkers. I had brought some of my home roasted coffee only to find Jeffrey and Craig did not drink coffee. I am glad I remembered to bring my single cup drip coffee maker. In the house, I was determined to be the best guest ever. This because there is a reputation of weekend guests being awful burdens, and I got the feeling that Jeffrey may have anticipated some form of amorous payment in return for the invite. I did the dishes, I made breakfast, I kept the Britta water picture filled, and bought pizza for dinner. For breakfast I even hand-churned butter using the Mary Susan mason jar method. I did it very casually. The result was a nice sweet unsalted butter.

Jeffrey seemed to know quite a lot of people. Cherry Grove was a very friendly place. He told me he met more people inn one year than he did for 3 years at the Pines. One drizzly afternoon we walked through he meatrack to visit the Pines. The Pines is the "Chelsea boys" and Money set. David Geffen etc. Where the Grove is in your face cozy, the Pines is laid back and reclusive. We visited a couple more coffee drinkers, but was never able to hook them up with coffee, as I did the two earlier mentioned.

Apparently as I wase getting off the boat, a woman went to Jeffrey and invited him and Craig to a party. It was primarily a property owners party, at least a seasonal renters party. He told her hat I was staying and she said it was fine for me to come as well. At the party we scattered, I chatted with those I had met, and ultimately explored the yard. There was a small fountain with a pissing boy statue and others. I was looking at it, when I heard "Excuse me, Excuse me". Since I doubted it could be addressed to me, I ignored the address. She then said "Do you like my statue? I am the Hostess" (as well as the artist). I then realized she had been talking to me. I immediately offered up my invitation by proxy. "Hello, I am Kevin, staying with Jeffrey and Craig for the weekend". Suddenly everything was fine, she was making sure I was not a day-tripper crashing their party. The woman reminded me of Lainie Kazan. She is apparently a Lesbian, and this skinny near naked older guy is her muse. I chatted with the sunset guys and a few others, but ultimately the party was a typical cocktail garden party. (Stanley) was there in a crazy wacky 70s disco outfit. I wonder if he's had it from the day. The next day she shouted a hello to me from a cafe on the boardwalk.  I suspect and at one point somewhat confirmed he had told many of the ICNY court members he was hosting a Monarch from Kentucky.

I met Sal Piro, the president of the RHPS Fanclub, he was the entertainment director of the Grove Hotel. But also the writer of "Class Reunion" (this blog 1-4-04) that weekend's original theatre production of which the previous dressing room story was in preparation. I was appointed bartender before and during the shows intermission. Curiously, I was under dressed and was ordered to change and wear all black. I packed for the beach, and am not one to bring black to the beach. My co-tender went home and lent me a shirt. The Sunday show, where I was actually in the audience, the guys from the sunset the first night were bartending. They wore open Hawaiian shirts and shorts. I think (Barry?) held me to a higher standard because I was on the board of the Arts Project of Cherry Grove. hehe (not at all). During the show, I was down in the dressing rooms. Billy Anne, kept wishing she had some coffee. Hearing this, I sneaked out and got 3-4 large coffees to go from the pizza place under the hotel. When I got back, she was still still saying it in her deep gravelly, wonderful voice, and I was able to pull one out of the bag and say "You ask and you shall receive". According to Craig, Billy Anne was talking about that rabbit out of the hat trick the rest of the weekend. I may well be known as the coffee guy to her from then on.

Saturday night after the play, we went to the Ice Palace. The theme was Hawaiian. They had a Hawaiian dance show. Afterward, they had Karaoke. There was a contest and I entered. I sang Losing My Religion. I came in third. I was definately the dark horse. as the other two winners seemed to be very well known. But I got a trophy. That was the first trophy I ever one. I have a few plaques but not a trophy. The next day I joined the Pareo beauty contest. A kind of sarong, its essentially a beach wrap tied around the waist. I stripped to my shorts for it, and was lucky to have been wearing my Hawaiian boxers. I did not win that, despite flashing the boxers. Many of the contestants wore them over their pants, an older guy stripped to his tighty whitees when he saw me do it. Jeffrey managed to do something with his hair, and I think wore it in the dress style.

I got a bit drunk one night. I ended up doing shots of jaeger with the Daddy Bartender at the back bar. I ditched when it was time for him to clean up. I really did not want to hook up. Turns out he was staying with Panzi's Emperor Bill. I made it back to the YMCA and the boys had my bed ready.

While I was sitting in the audience of the play Sunday, I ended up in one of Sal's seats. Sal had turned some in and I had screwed up and had tickets for Saturday but thought I had them for Sunday. When I realized my error, the ticket guy was kind enough to let me switch. I ended up sitting between some middle aged man from the Pines, and 2 long term lovers from the Grove. They told me they had been coming to the Grove since the 50s. It was so affirming to see these long term couples.

The whole place was like a gay, summer camp - crossed with Disney World. No rides, but quite the attractions.

Thank you notes

This past christmas I was paying attention. After a thank you note guilt trip over a belated birthday gift. I sent thank you notes immediately. I was listening to a story on the radi that suggested email was not an appropriate thank you note.

I know Grandma is the worst about not getting them, yet the worst at sending them. Ok so I will give her that she is 97, fell and is now in a nursing home, but how the heck can she not remember sending a birthday gift a month late, but remember when a thank you note should have arrived had she sent the gift on time?

Mom and Tami sent e-notes. Shame shame shame.

Arts Project of Cherry Grove, Class Reunion

Arts Project of Cherry Grove, Class Reunion this is the show, I was bartender for when I was on fire island. I was stying with the costumer and a tech person, so naturally I volunteered to help out. Tending bar (wine and beer) was right up my alley. The play was written by Sal Piro (president of the RHPS Fan Club) and reminded me of a drag queen verison of Grease.

WHY DOGS ARE BETTER PETS THAN CATS

From as the Grove turns :Dec 5, 2003 : "WHY DOGS ARE BETTER PETS THAN CATS
Dogs will tilt their heads and try to understand every word you say.
Cats will ignore you and take a nap.

Cats look silly on a leash.

When you come home from work, your dog will be happy and lick your face.
Cats will still be mad at you for leaving in the first place.

Dogs will give you unconditional love until the day they die.
Cats will make you pay for every mistake you've ever made since the day you were born.

A dog knows when you're sad. And he'll try to comfort you.
Cats don't care how you feel, as long as you remember where the can opener is.

Dogs will bring you your slippers.
Cats will drop a dead mouse in your slippers.

When you take them for a ride, dogs will sit on the seat next to you.
Cats have to have their own private basket, or they won't go at all.

Dogs will come when you call them. And they'll be happy.
Cats will have someone take a message and get back to you.

Dogs will play fetch with you all day long.
The only thing cats will play with all day long are small rodents or bugs, preferably ones that look like they're in pain.

Dogs will wake you up if the house is on fire.
Cats will quietly sneak out the back door. "
